Just type in console three commands:

vid_gamma
intensity
gl_modulate

And share your values.
These are the settings for graphic part of Quake 2, they determine how bright and saturated colors are.
If we collect enough different settings, we may average them out, and make better looking new maps for Quake 2.
Give good feedback, and you will get better looking new maps.

Prior to r1gl I used to use:

set gl_modulate 4
set intensity 3.5
set vid_gamma 0.6


But with r1gl, I use:

set gl_texture_lighting_mode 1
set gl_contrast 0.8
set gl_saturation 1
set gl_modulate 4
set intensity 1
set vid_gamma 0.6
set gl_coloredlightmaps 1
set gl_doublelight_entities 1

I use R1Q2 with R1GL.

set vid_gamma "1"
set intensity "2"
set gl_modulate "7"

I like it bright enough to see, but not so bright that it washes out the majority of colors on textures.

See, I guess I never readeded the fucking manual. I had no idea you could tweak the lighting that much.

Thank you so much, now there is something to compare.
It seems that most radical changes you can see switching to:
gl_texture_lighting_mode 1

Colours become washed-out and much softer, but with more parameters to tinker with, you can get well balanced lighting, except lamps.
Textures of 2 lamps on u2b3 becomes "weird"
But there is always a risk with shining textures.
And water lights-up.
For comparison, my settings are:

set gl_texture_lighting_mode 0
set gl_modulate 4
set intensity 3
set vid_gamma 0.7

Of course a lot depends on your computer screens, but this is beyond this comparison.

Cool to see the side by side difference between my current settings and Quadz more involved and tweaked settings. Although, I'm still happier with my current settings. Makes map textures look a little overall darker, but it makes the details on them a little bolder too.

Indeed. It'd been ages (possibly a decade?) since I'd played around with these.

I notice the gl_texture_lighting_mode 1 examples in the video use my gl_contrast 0.8 which probably contributes to them looking a little more washed out.

(I'm not sure if/why I set it that way. I'll probably experiment a bit more, seeing some of the differences.)

Noticing my contrast 0.8 setting was washing out things a bit, I experimented in the opposite direction:

It looks cool, but I'd have to eliminate the shadows and get rid of that bright tropical blue water. Then lower the intensity .2 or so.

Slime on q2dm3 turned canary green, and lava literally burns my eyes.

I will use it as an extreme case, maybe it is possible to hide something on the map, that is invisible until you turn full acid :p

I have 21" Philips Brilliance CRT, that has best image quality there is, 120HZ and buzzes to me :)

Doubt I'll leave it setup that way for long. But it's been fun to see familiar maps in a new way.
