If I want to play against max jr. in our house using two computers, what is the easiest way to do it. to set them up i mean. Is it possible to connect them with a phone line or do the two computers need to be networked.

My nephew and I use a direct connection with a parallel cable, when he brings his computer over.  There are better ways but right now that is the only method we have.

If you go with a parallel cable, it's cheap, but the computers will need to be in the same room.

I can help walk you through this method if you want.

I would network them through a LAN connection. Used to have that set up when I had 2 computers and worked like a charm.  I think it is possible to hook them up through a phone line, but the pings would suck. Through a LAN there is almost no lag and the fragging is wonderful

Well they wouldn't have to be in the same room if you got a long enough parallel cable, or some kind of lengthener for it or something. Just a thought

It's a simple little program to use, just set server to listen instead of dedicated.

My nephew just got dail-up at his house, so I also use this to set us up a server when he's not here.
