Tool is good. They can't be categorized into one genre really. I love how all you metal guys think that just Slayer, Megadeth, Van Halen, etc. play guitar fast it makes them great musicians. It's music so it's all an opinion. I'd rather listen to Jimmy Page play Black Mountain Side then hear Yngwie Malmsteen play something boring really fast. Hilarious guitar tab post bryan, just because it's not difficult doesn't mean it's not good, good song writing > playing around the 12th fret super fast. I'm sure you like Black Sabbath, look at any guitar tab off Paranoid.

Nah. I'm a redneck. I don't love Megadeth. About the only Megadeth album that I thoroughly enjoyed was Countdown to Extinction. Just not a big fan of Dave Mustaine's vocal delivery. He fine-tuned it for Extinction, but then after that album, just like Metallica did, they went all pussified and tried to become more radio-friendly. But what do you expect from a bunch of YOU KNOW WHATS from San Fran?

And while I love Tool, I will agree that not all parts of the band are particularly talented. The drummer Danny Carey is pretty damn good. Don't give a shit what anyone in this thread said about him, he's good, period. Maynard Keenan ain't the most traditional or talented singer, but his style and frequency fits the music well. The guitarist (don't even know his name) ain't anything to write home about. If he were, maybe I'd know his fucking name off the top of my head. Yeah, a lot of Tool's tunes are kinda repetitive but I think that's kinda the point of their music at times, to sound kinda trance-enducing and hypnotic. It's always been classified somewhere in the "progressive" category of the metal genre. And progressive tends to be the most complex and complicated music, which means that usually the bands playing it are considered the best of the best as far as talent goes. But Tool? Eh, not so much. When I think of progressive metal these days, first band I always mention is Mastodon. In my opinion, Danny Carey is the most talented member of Tool. And as good as he may be, Mastodon's drummer Brann Dailor would drum circles around him. Dude is fuckin' scary good on the drums.
