It's got great SP potential.  I wouldn't waste time on an MP game with it unless you're going for a specific audience (IE an Aliens vs Predator style MP would be perfect for it, but Q2 style isn't).

To me anyway, single player got a little boring after a while. I always wanted to try it out in multiplayer but never got around to it. Mostly I didn't bother looking into playing online because I had already tried Q4 online and it ran choppy as hell even with all the video options lowered. If a game that relies on split second moves to decide outcomes doesn't run as smooth in MP as it does in SP, no point in playing it in my opinion. Might as well stick with Q2.

That's one thing that was a bit of a turn-off when I was racing Nascar 2003 with the BTR guys. Other players cars kinda jittered as they moved through turns. When you're millimeters off of a guys bumper and drafting them hard, looking to slingshot past them as you exit a turn, it was a bit of a pain in the ass trying to stay in the slipstream of someone bouncing back and forth in front of you while also trying not to juice it too hard into their rear and end up spinning both of you out.

I never played Q4's MP except at QuakeCon before it came out.  I'd rather play Q2 too.  Doom 3 was different though: it was slower paced, less arcadey and more tactics.  When you can't see in the shadows and a single rocket can take you out you don't bother running in to rooms guns blazing.

It's 4 people only though, DM & TDM only by default.  There's a couple nice MP mods out there that are a lot of fun but nobody plays.

I found Doom 3 SP boring too, I'm talking about someone making a new SP game off it.  That could be fun.
