Yep, though that seemed to change around 1999-2000. Half-Life and Quake 3 had built-in server browsers, and UT99 had the most robust out of them all! I remember being entertained by UT's interface and music while at times I had to wait ages for the server list on my machine to fully update.

Heh heh, I think back then it would have been a really nice feature, but nowadays my PC is powerful enough so that I can alt-tab in and out of games almost instantly, and also importantly not lose system resources. IDK what other people do, but I prefer to just grab an ip off of q2servers.com or TS' homepage, open up r1q2 which starts in console and connect to a server. Having a server list in web CGI is nice because I get current server stats without needing a third party app. Chances are, while I'm playing, I already have my web browser open.

I do think that for the more casual, laid back players, a proper server in-game browser could be useful for them. Quake 1/Quakeworld clients have them, so why not Q2?

Blood is pimp, my favorite build engine game. Of course out of all 4 of them it was one of the 2 not to have a source release

I'm an oldschooler from the Mplayer days too, however i fully miss Heat.net. I was known on there as Chicken, TheRunninChicken, MidnightFox, RogueFox or RougeFox. I sware if it was remotely possible i sware i'd see if Heat.net could be raised from the dead and relaunched to give Steam a run for it's money.

I requested to join. I used to play Quake 2 like crazy. I was even there for the heat.net days lol. The game is still my favorite FPS game to date. Would love to get together with some  people and game sometime

kick up quake2 and type /connect tastyspleen.net then you can type goto for a server list...

railz for instagib

ra2 for ra2

all the tourney servers for opentdm (the tdm/1v1 mod)

nothing keeps people from playing quake2 other than the mentality that its old and dead (which its old, but still not dead)
