Really? I'd say you're about half right, but I don't recall seeing any upper class people either, hehe. It's a decent sized little city, but I guess it went downhill a few decades back. There's a bunch of old rundown and abandoned huge factory buildings probably from the 40's or 50's around where I-985 comes through, so I guess at one time it was a pretty nice place. I guess it was back in the 70's when all the decent old cities starting going to shit. It's weird to hear my folks talk about the part of town where they grew up and how it used to be nice suburbs. Now it's all cracktown ghettos.
Maybe they built a new walmart since the last time you went, but it doesn't really matter what part of town it's in, it's undoubtedly gonna have a lot of hispanic customers. The old downtown square in Gainesville is decent looking, but there's really nothing there worth a shit. There used to be a pretty cool little coffee shop in the square called Little Coffee Shop of Horrors that had a old horror cinema motif thing going. They sold their own blends of coffee with names like "Burial Grounds" etc. On the weekends they had a room in the back where they'd screen old classic horror films.

The nice places are the ones on or close to the lake, they might be outside the Gainesville city limits. My uncle lives 8 bedroom, 5 bath house on the lake. His son use to live in really nice neighborhood off of Thompson or Browns bridge road (I always get the names confused). My mom's side of the family is very well off, I guess that's why I see really nice areas to.
The square is kinda neat, but like you said there is not a lot there that I would interested in. I did get my wedding jewelry through the jeweler there (family friend)

Quake II is not 27 years old. I refuse to accept THAT much time has gone by.
