Well I'm not going to walk up, shake their hand, and introduce myself. I'm just going to shoot them... then maybe I'll check their ID after they bleed to death.

I was thinking more of a sneak attack by the intruder, where he wrestles the firearm off of you. When bad things happen, I like to anticipate the worst thing that could happen.

Exactly. If you REALLY want to be prepared, it's a good idea to practice making sweeps of your house with your firearm UNLOADED of course. Maybe have a friend set up some kind of targets in random places and have him stay behind you to critique how you're moving. Knowing the layout of your house and having a plan beforehand of how to properly clear every room can mean the difference between surviving and getting shot in the back because you missed one single corner or large piece of furniture in a room. Handguns are probably best because of the short muzzle. Always remember to stay back from a doorway as much as comfortably possible while you pie off around the sides of the door to make sure no one is hiding against the walls on either side of the door. You ALWAYS want to maximize the distance between you and the threat, whether you're entering a door or sweeping through a room and pieing off around corners inside of a room or other objects. If someone is hiding with their back to the wall just inside of a door and they see the muzzle of your gun coming through, they can quickly and easily wrestle your pistol away and use it on you.

Of course you'll also want to get lots of practice with your pistol. Shooting the gun properly is obviously important to practice, but thats just one of many things. You'll want to practice the proper motions of taking care of problems you might have when firing your pistol too. The last thing you want to hear coming from your pistol when you have an assailant coming at you is just a click or nothing at all. Practice drills where the pistol won't fire because the magazine is not fully seated. Practice drills where the pistol won't fire because there is an unejected brass in the chamber. It should become instinctual for you to immediately have one motion that you go through in order to make sure the weapon is ready to fire. Without having to think about it, the user should slap the mag into the butt, cock the slide, regrip the weapon, line up the sights, and break the shot all within a second and without taking their eyes off the target. For some higher capacity auto pistols, its also a good idea to fill the clip -1 round. Some firearms have a tendency to jam with full mags.

Mine had the muzzle break though,  very effective.  I have a pic somewhere with a good 3 foot flash coming off it.

picked up for $340.00,  Don't think you can find them easy anymore.
