What might be going on is.. Fruitz-of-dojo may be using different value of this variable to determine the dimensions of the textures. I don't know but this is first guess.

any advice on rate or maxpackets anyone? i'm a tad unfamiliar with video commands.. bottom line is i need a new pc and provider, thats a given. but for the time being i dont know what else i can do.. gl_picmip 7 helps but makes q2 look like super mario 1. any help is appreciated.

metal: how do you know that's your provider, and not something local to your house, or your wireless setup?  Have you tried calling them, you could rule out local issues.  Anyways they should be able to help with that.  Also I play in windows mode on a laptop because of the integrated video, but in windowed opengl would work.  It seems like opengl is smoother than software even for a card that can't utilize it right.
