Occam's razor:
http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/General/occam.html
Applied in this case, since the "orbs" can be explained by lens flare and other optical phenomena that are easily reproducible, then that is the most likely explanation, as opposed to the one involving metaphysics and the vagaries of human psychology (referring to the "creeped out" feeling here).
Plenty of debunking info can be found at
www.randi.org
. A good starting point would be to type "orbs," "lens flare," or simply "ghosts" into that site's search engine.

The orb in the first photo posted in this thread is a dust particle close to the lens. It's near the lens, therefore out of focus but far enough away to be illuminated by the flash. The particle is simply not visible until the flash goes off. Just as you don't see dust in the air in the room unless it's in the beam of sunlight coming into a darker room or against a darker background.
Other orbs, usually larger and more colorful are due to lens flares. These are caused by internal reflections in the lenses composing the camera lens system. Coated optics are used to reduce flare but primarily to reduce chromatic aberation to give sharper images over a broad spectrum of light. Bright lights, usually the Sun, cause the optics to reflect the light from lens to lens, causing a cascade of flares in the image. To avoid flares, don't shoot into the sun or a bright point source of light. Duh.

haha yeah use to watch the ghost hunters show on scifi while you can't really believe anything on tv, i would at least let myself be fooled enough to peak my interest.
my buddy bought a house last year where this big crackhead, gay, fat man slit his wrists and walked from one end of the house to the other and died in the bathroom. i remember when he bought it they ripped up a trail of tiles and shit that he bled on... and how we tried our best to get that guy to appear (yes provoking the fat junkie fag) no dice, ghosts arent real

Quake II is not 27 years old. I refuse to accept THAT much time has gone by.
