why go through all that trouble?

the average users does not need to dabble in that crap... and for the average users I suggest win7. it's by far the best os produced by MS, even more so then XP.

people live too much in the past and listen to idiots too often. shit some people still use win2k thinking it;s more stable then xp...

all linux fanboys act like you. but nobody needs to use that shit, sorry... gamers, casual users... stick with win7.

further more, as for vista, i had little to no trouble with that os. if you crashed that often, you're doing something wrong to provoke it. learn how to use a computer!

Reinstalling windows sucks, not the place for this, but didn't want a new thread.

Our pc has been screwy for awhile, some number of viruses I never totally got rid of.
So I had backed up and was going to reinstall anyhow... wife has xphome and I have xppro to put in

But it froze the other day, would load windows, and get to user selction but no matter who i chose it would
lock up on loading settings.

Safe mode same thing, safe mode with command prompt same thing as well.
Wich was weird, I remember just going straight to command prompt without doing anything else but guess i was wrong.

Reinstalling is just a bitch, finding the right drivers and all that shit, and getting the wireless crap going again that i hadn't
touched for almost 2 years, no idea what network key I had used blah blah blah... wifes pc, all unfamiliar.

Downloading last vid driver and back to norm, all so I can do it again

Since I couldnt get on to backup the last bit we had in mydocs (and my last few weeks of quake shit

)
I just installed a second windows.. planning on wiping out the last one after retrieval. But I think I'll wipe the drive clean
and run thru this again since I have everything figured out.

Hmm, tried everything I can think of.

The video card shows up as video controller vga compatable in device manager, and properties shows it as a pci
(PCI Slot 13 (PCI bus 1, device 5, function 0), but I think that might be wrong.. should be agp???

this is a toshiba satellite m115 s1016, and I've upgraded the bios already and tried several versions of the apropriate
ATI drivers. card is radeon integrated/motherboard Xpress 200m from what I can find on the net, no way to recognise it on the system

Think I'll restart this in trouble shooting
My Q2 is on hold for now, unless I try for software mode (done it before:) )

There is usually an ".exe" you can run to install the drivers, that is probably the simplest most problem free method.

When the exe is run, it loads the drivers into the system.

Basically there is a configuration file (.inf), and a (.sys), and you can register the driver with Windows to install it. Then each driver itself has a few options, some load on boot, some don't etc.

Moral of the story, unless you want to insert the driver into Windows with a utility that will register it, you should be able to just run the program to install it.

Is there not a program from ATI that installs the video driver?
Do you see the video card post output as the machine boots up (the monitor is plugged into it, and you might see a POST)?

The ATI catalyst thing had no luck, and anything from toshiba site had similar probs.
I think my system isn't recognizing the card, either for what it is or maybe if it's there at all...

Device manager has it listed in other devices as ? video controller (VGA compatable) Not sure if thats my radeon card or not
few more ? in there for other things, but this is the important one.

On a laptop, havn't seen a post on startup for the card (my other machine does, tells the memory and everything first thing)

Thread in trouble shooting has where I'm at now on it.

I had a chance to use Vista at my brothers house as I was helping with some laptops. Had to back up some things to another computer so I could restore the OS because it got hosed, well I found simple home networking to be a major pain in the ass with Vista. I used a thumb drive to move all the files over to the other computer, but when I was done I was going to use a network share to move the files back. Couldn't get the computer to connect to the share no matter what options. Finally had to say screw it and used some folder they have called the "Public" folder, which is stupid, I should be able to share any folder I wish. Hopefully Windows 7 will not have these home networking issues, though I'll never use it unless helping someone else with their computer.

As a side note to some other post in this topic, I do use Linux, but I am not one to say "OMG IT BETTER DAN WINDOZE ALL SHOULD USE ITZ". I recommend people use what works for them. For people wanting an alternative and don't need to run any Windows specific software, I usually recommend Linux Mint. I think it provides a nice smooth transition and comes setup with all media codecs preinstalled, and you don't have to hunt around for drivers.
