Copying and pasting whole Maps with Quark
« on: August 08, 2009, 06:06:46 PM »
I'm not sure how familiar you all are with quark, but I have an issue. If I wanted to manipulate a single player map, what do i need to do in order for it to work. It seems that copying and pasting all the brushes and entities into a new window doesn't work, and the program thinks there is nothing there so it wont build the map. Any help would be nice.

I'm confused. Is this an existing Single player map from the standard game? Did you decompile the .bsp into a .map using a program like gladiator first?

I've seen people take sections from single player maps and paste them into other leves in quark before. So, yes it is possible. We just need more info to know what is wrong in your case.

I'm sorry for not being more specific, but you basically answered my question. So there is a way to make a .bsp into a .map file so   that the level can be modified? I'll research that gladiator program. I thought there might be a simpler way by just copying and pasting all the brushes, but oh well.

*EDIT*: it turns out I am still confused. When i google that gladiator program all i get is some bot program. All I wanted to do was to take pieces out of existing q2 dm maps. Like the people who made those "the Edge" modifications, how did they do that?

Gladiator bot comes with a conversion tool.

It is needed to make a path system for the bots to use,  I forget the format it goes to for that.
But another thing the program can do is convert to .map as well.

Panjoo rox!  He has the gladiator bsp to map converter -> http://panjoo.tastyspleen.net/downloads/winbspc.zip

.map version of edge with no bugs in it -> http://panjoo.tastyspleen.net/downloads/q2dm1_sourcemap.zip

 :bravo: Panjoo

WinBSP works great. And it's fast - no more than 5 seconds to go from .bsp to .map format. It's a godsend program if you want to make your own "Edge" or tweak some existing map. You may lose the exact lighting values of the original map though.

As far as copying and paste functions in your map editor - I've found with mine it's hit or miss. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I've tried to figure out the exact order/process that it prefers to get a clean reliable copy, but haven't.

I've occasionally been forced to 'fix' a .map file so that it doesn't get leaks to the void after winbspc makes it into a .map from a .bsp.

I'd copy all of the brushes into a new project file, and then slap a big box made of brushes around it to make sure the map will get thru the build process without errors/crashes. After that it's just a matter of adding entities like lights and items and spawns back to the map.
