tastyspleen.net / Faderjok ban status
« on: September 01, 2012, 01:24:36 PM »
Salutations,

Fader has been banned for about 7 weeks now.

He was banned for conducting an rcon flood attack against a server running on tastyspleen hardware (WHALE) which persisted for at least an hour.

This attack functions by continuously flooding a server with enough rcon packets to disrupt the ability of admins or rcon-based services like WallFly from being able execute rcon commands, thus preventing rcon-based enforcement of kicks, bans, etc.  This kind of attack will have a varying degree of success depending on how the Q2 server is configured.

Since shortly after the ban, Fader claims to have broken contact with Razor:

[15:49:40] <MCS_FaderJok0> so when will i be unbanned? the suspense is killing me
[15:52:05] <quadz> dunno, haven't discussed it w/ the other admins... it won't be less than a month though.  you really screwed up pretty royally with that little stunt
[15:52:26] <MCS_FaderJok0> i know
[15:52:28] <MCS_FaderJok0> ;[
[16:12:05] <MCS_FaderJok0> ok
[16:12:12] <MCS_FaderJok0> i've cut off communication with razor
[16:12:25] <MCS_FaderJok0> i promise

Tue Jul 24
[15:46:37] <jesse> so how have you been spending the banned time fader?
[15:46:56] <jesse> enjoying summer or socializing with razor?
[15:47:15] <jesse> a little bit of both would be an improvement
[15:47:16] <jesse> ;>
[15:59:54] <MCS_FaderJok0> funny
[16:00:02] <MCS_FaderJok0> but i stopped talking to razor about 3 weeks ago
[16:00:07] <MCS_FaderJok0> <;
[16:04:44] <MCS_FaderJok0> obviously it's hopeless if about fuckteen different people asked me to stop it
[16:05:33] <MCS_FaderJok0> i don't think he was very happy about it either coz i see him impersonating my name at fusters from time to time

Anyway...

After discussion w/ other admins, the consensus seems to be to unban at this point.

Mitigating factors were:

  - the attack causes no permanent harm to the Q2 server
  - age 16 at the time
  - first offense
  - seven week ban should be long enough to communicate that this level of offense isn't taken lightly

Stipulations are:

  - Fader needs to understand that any further 'shenanigans' of this caliber would likely result in perm-ban.

So:

The ban is now removed.

Go forth and douche thee not.

vanilla / vanilla mymap rotation
« on: June 13, 2012, 10:55:25 PM »
Salutations,

With the player count on vanilla these days being lower than it used to be, I've noticed the larger maps sometimes emptying the server in a way that I think wasn't an issue when the server was always packed with players.

Example from this afternoon.  q2rdm13 was mymap'd, but current mymap rules require a rotation map to appear between non-rotation maps:

[2012-06-13 Wed 14:51:01] Cajmere: mymap q2rdm13 -pu
[2012-06-13 Wed 14:51:01] console: nextmap => torment base3 q2rdm13(-pu) bunk1 ware1(+pu) ware2 jail1 jail2 jail3 jail4 ...
...
[2012-06-13 Wed 14:51:32] * Fraglimit hit.
[2012-06-13 Wed 14:51:37] MAP_CHANGE:  torment (was:base2)
...
[2012-06-13 Wed 15:01:43] * Fraglimit hit.
[2012-06-13 Wed 15:01:49] MAP_CHANGE:  base3 (was:torment)
[2012-06-13 Wed 15:01:54] DISCONNECT:  [11] "[BTF]Misery"
[2012-06-13 Wed 15:01:54] DISCONNECT:  [3]  "S4"
[2012-06-13 Wed 15:02:08] DISCONNECT:  [7]  "Cajmere"
[2012-06-13 Wed 15:02:21] DISCONNECT:  [4]  "Justice Beaver"
[2012-06-13 Wed 15:03:21] DISCONNECT:  [2]  "stargazer"
[2012-06-13 Wed 15:03:40] DISCONNECT:  [1]  "Tommy"
(server empty)

Unfortunately the rotation map cleared the server, and I suspect q2rdm13 probably wouldn't have if it had been allowed that slot.

Ideally WallFly would have information about large maps vs. small maps, and would select rotation maps suitable to the number of players on the server.

I don't have time to code that now, so... easiest experiment I can think of is to try removing the required rotation map interleave for the time being.

Therefore: The rotation map interleave is disabled for now on vanilla.  We'll see how that goes...

tastyspleen.net / Deliberately Crashing Servers
« on: March 15, 2012, 03:29:24 AM »
hahaha. Tough guy on the forums. I gave you a chance to 1v1 me like a real man, but you couldn't handle it, pussy.

Would this be about the time my console started showing messages like the following, and from reading the game chat you appeared to be deliberately crashing the server?

tastyspleen.net / tastyspleen L4D2 server (via steam group)
« on: March 11, 2012, 07:58:45 PM »
Aloha!

It seems centrally located L4D2 dedicated servers are becoming a little sparse these days, so we've set up a server on our Dallas, TX system which is available to members of the 'tastyspleen' group on Steam.

Once you've joined the tastyspleen group, the L4D2 server should automatically show up in the in-game menus.  You can create a normal lobby and invite friends, then select the "use a server from your steam groups" option.

0x1337c0de / id Tech 4 engine (DOOM 3) to be open sourced soon
« on: August 04, 2011, 08:41:36 PM »

At QuakeCon 2010, following id's acquisition by Bethesda, John Carmack seemed to indicate some uncertainty about whether id would be allowed to continue its policy of open source releases of older engines.

However, reportedly, Carmack confirmed today in his QuakeCon 2011 keynote that the id Tech 4 engine will be open source following RAGE's release:

tastyspleen.net / new datacenter ping test
« on: December 08, 2010, 08:28:05 AM »
Howdy,

tastyspleen.net may be getting a hardware upgrade, but this also means its IP would change.

It will still be in Dallas, TX - just a different datacenter.

Here's a sample IP from that datacenter: 67.228.53.218  (was: 66.228.118.51)

If everyone could please run pings and traceroutes to this IP, and also pings and traceroutes to the current tastyspleen.net, and if you're seeing anything significantly worse on the new IP, please post here.

UPDATE: There's a Q2 server now running on 67.228.53.218:27910 for ping testing - please try it out.

Thanks for your help!

Trying this out as a single poll covering all the maps currently under discussion...

Hopefully the forum poll system will handle it...

And to discourage people from trying to game the system, *cough* dyn.winshop.com.au *cough* ... this won't be an anonymous poll:

Side note: In my opinion this license is very reasonable, and I would happily release my own (quadz) overrides under this license as well.

tastyspleen.net / "Poor Sport" forum (de)merit badge
« on: June 07, 2010, 01:29:42 PM »
A new forum membergroup has been added called "Poor Sport".

It's similar to ShortBus without restricting posting privileges.

Currently the idea is that the "Poor Sport" demerit badge will be handed out when someone exhibits unsportsmanlike behavior during an official tourney/event.

By default, the badge will be removed after 1 week.

(But obviously, in the "hypothetical" situation that someone is participating in a weekly tourney, and if they insist on being a poor sport each week, their badge would keep being renewed each week.  But that's up to them.)

Regards,

:razzberry:

For those not familiar with KOTH, the structure is: Challenger picks the map, winner moves on... Lather, rinse repeat.

Here, travolta was the challenger.  His map pick was totally legit for the event.

19:31:17 * Timelimit hit. Match ended.
19:31:17 * >SR<V43V1CT15 wins, 26 to -1.
19:31:18 * >SR<V43V1CT15: too easy
19:31:18 * Venova disconnected
19:31:24 * >SR<V43V1CT15 joined team 'Visitors'
19:31:24 * >SR<V43V1CT15 became captain of 'Visitors'
19:31:27 * travolta joined team 'Hometeam'
19:31:27 * travolta became captain of 'Hometeam'
19:31:43 * travolta started a vote: map ztn2dm1
19:32:04 * >SR<V43V1CT15: ztn2dm1? no thanks :) ill play shit maps, but i wont play maps THAT terrible
19:32:05 * Vote passed!
19:32:05 * New map: ztn2dm1
19:32:05 * >SR<V43V1CT15 disconnected
19:32:05 MAP_CHANGE:  ztn2dm1 (was:q2rdm5)

For the record:

[19:46:19] <quadz> frankly, alllmost tempted to add a 1-week global server ban for unsportsmanlike behavior during an official tourney event :P

You've been warned.  Don't be a

kthx

tastyspleen.net / packetloss situation (may, 2010)
« on: May 17, 2010, 01:01:45 AM »
Salutations,

ThePlanet is requesting traceroutes from everyone who is experiencing bad packetloss to tastyspleen.net.

I gave them some traces showing packetloss from tastyspleen -> VaeVictis' IP on Friday night.  However, they requested IP addresses of other users who are also experiencing packetloss.  When I provided those IP addresses, they logged onto tastyspleen and ran some traces themselves.  They have pointed out that each of the IPs I provided takes a different route out of theplanet.  Only Vae's went through the NTT.NET provider.

Therefore they are requesting tracroutes from your end, to see if there's any commonality in the reverse route:

Quote
We did couple of tests on the network issue and so far we don't see any problems with our NTT provider.

The IPs you provided in you ticket:
24.10.xxx.xxx
62.94.xxx.xxx
216.227.xxx.xxx
204.8.xxx.xxx

Are going out through different providers and we didn't see any loss on those mtr and traceroutes. It is possible that those customers are coming in through the same provide so can you please provide us with mtr or traceroutes from those locations that way we would be able to pint point any network problem. Here are the traceroutes from your server to those locations and you clearly can see that they are going out on different providers:

Couple of things that you should look into when you are experiencing the packet loss:

Ask a customer to run mtr or traceroute to your server.
Here is a link for WINMTR http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winmtr.html.

Note, I downloaded the WINMTR tool mentioned above, however, it doesn't work for me.  I even downloaded the source code and recompiled it and have debugged it a bit, but, I'm not sure yet why it's not working. (It's actually sending ICMP echo requests out the port but getting no response... I can see using tcpdump they're essentially similar to the ICMP echo requests sent by the Ping tool, but, maybe WINMTR's are malformed in some way.)

Anyway...

As a first step, if anyone experiencing bad packetloss to tastyspleen.net could please run some traceroutes, and post the results here.

Thanks,

:frustration:

dm / Experiment: A few occasional custom dm maps
« on: April 11, 2010, 06:40:24 PM »
Howdy,

As an experiment I've added a few custom maps to 'mymap' on dm.  However, I've set it up so that at least 5 regular dm maps will be slotted between any possible custom maps.

Currently availble: match1 fury ztn2dm3 aerowalk frdm3 grom_dm3

Not trying to turn dm into mutant, just thought some occasional classic custom dm maps might be nice.

But, it's an experiment.  If the regulars think this sucks, I'll remove them.

Regards,

quadz

Quake / Google ports Quake II to HTML5
« on: April 02, 2010, 02:30:10 PM »

http://googlewebtoolkit.blogspot.com/2010/04/look-ma-no-plugin.html

Google translated the Java port of Q2 to Javascript, and ported it to HTML5 in-browser technologies (WebGL, WebSockets, HTML5 Audio)

(Of course, it says "up to 60 fps", but, still... :))
