I also watched Colbert yesterday. I wasn't sure what I was watching when he introduced Fela. Thought it might be some touring African troupe but then they got funkified.  :bananaw00t:

I've noticed a lot of these earlier songs have essentially the same tempo (BPM). Here's one that's a little faster with a great bass track.

Here's the original (which i'm supposing is hand crafted from cut up samples rather than played live, but it's pretty damn sweet, and really exemplifies how important the spaces between the notes are)

I learned of this tune only a week or two ago via Jehar's TastyCast.  I immediately bought it on amazon, and most every time i've listened to it so far I end up having one of those, "aw--goddamn i wish i'd written that bass line" feelings.
