1v1 and TDM Demos / Re: What are your favorite matches to rewatch today?
« Last post by XANA on June 20, 2026, 08:29:59 AM »
Speaking purely about 1v1 because I never got into teams that much; I don't really watch matches, but I think of individual games sometimes. I found myself gravitating towards players that had a very calm and relaxed playstyle but still managed to win. I really liked the idea of walking the entire game and winning. Those were always my favorite.

I watched isbjorn and Damiah a lot back then. There was and still is a really big fascination towards people with insanely fast and aggressive movement (I still play like that lole), and they were very passive by comparison, but were just as good. I really liked that at the time. Truthfully, I watched so many different demos from so many different players that they all kind of blended together. I had the most amount of demos from DaHanG, Damiah, isbjorn, Aone, zorre and blaizz though. They were just the best players that had the most amount of tournament demos at that point in time.

There was one game where Damiah joined up for a 4v1 as a joke and wound up steamrolling everyone, which was really funny. I can't seem to find the demo for it, which is unfortunate.

There are actually more games that I played personally that I think about, but it's hard to be objective about the quality of games that involve myself. I actually noticed a while back going through some of my older demos that I remember more games where something really funny or stupid happened, or where I hit some crazy insane shot than games where both me and my opponent play really well and are very close good games. That's kind of a shame but I imagine it's the same with most people.

I also like some old Memento Mori (NOR) matches from '99 like:

They felt like gods back then. They may look bad by today's standards but they played with low fps, ball mice, etc.

Cool man, have you checked out our discord server? Stop by if you haven’t:

http://discord.tastyspleen.net/

Brad/doze actually wasn’t big in the scene in 05 at all—until quakecon 05 that is. I never saw him playing in 03/04 really. Purri flew to America before qcon and stayed with doze, he spent a few weeks with him, and they lanned together practicing right up to the event. Doze hadn’t played q2 in some time.

As great of a player doze was it wasn’t really a surprise that he lost to purri.

These demos come to mind. These matches were a big deal in our community when they happened.

DaHanG v. PURRI - QuakeCon 2007 - ztn2dm3

DaHanG v. Damiah - NADL 2006 - ztn2dm2

DaHanG v. Damiah NADL 2006 - ztn2dm3

That’s from my YT channel. I tried to upload the more relevant matches available to me from the USA scene(primarily q2 players.org and tastyspleen communities).

1v1 and TDM Demos / What are your favorite matches to rewatch today?

I started Quake 2 back in 1999 on Heat.net... I spent a lot of time watching demos during my career.

Here are a few of my favorites to rewatch.

Lord Vader vs. Makavel (2nd match) - For some reason I was really influenced watching Lord Vader's map item control.

QuakeCon2005 GrandFinal: Purri vs Doze - At the time Doze was big in the US scene at the time (which was pretty much dead due to Q3) so it was a shock to see the result of this match.

Shub vs. Makaveli - Makaveli had such great style.

Polosatiy vs E8/SiD - Love ztn2dm2 and Polosatiy has nice movement.

Which are yours?

I agree first is sus, and second is "very interesting." I feel these chain cheaters when I am playing. You always know. It is like a laser. Also I have a feeling they are using nades/ nade launchers to get kills as you come around corners. Felt some really weird repetitive nade kills as well.

There is also the other side where there has always been this attitude that quake 2 cant possibly have any cheaters. Head stuck in the sand syndrome and refusal to acknowledge it.

Then again, when it comes to you specifically, you've always had the suspicion that lots of people were cheating, and you've posted lots of demos of lots of different players, and very very rarely do any of the demos contain anything noteworthy.

You people just need to come to terms with the fact that this is just how it is now. The admin staff is small and busy with life. You want someone who's hands-on and plays everyday and knows the climate on the servers. Sure, that would be best. But the fact is no one else is trustworthy enough to handle the job without overstepping, including myself, including elysium, including some of the admins who aren't admining (so be thankful for that).

I don't play anymore, but I look at the messageboard almost daily, and I can't really say that I've seen excessive amounts of different posts where people have been posting demos of suspected cheating or condumps of objectionable behavior. That's probably the best path to follow. Post it to the boards, an admin will read it, they'll do what they do with the admin process, they may come back and post about what they did (maybe not), and then it's done. If what's happening is you're repeatedly trying to get ahold of someone on discord and getting no response, well then maybe they're busy or maybe you're pestering them so much that they're ignoring you for some reason.

Thing is, I'm in the Tastyspleen discord too. I haven't seen a whole lot of people coming forward on there in any of the various sections posting about any problems they're having on the servers.

You gotta speak up. Best thing to do is, like I said, Post it to the boards. Make sure you include a demo or a condump or at the very least an accurate time and date and description of the problem so someone can locate it in the logs if they have to. Then maybe to raise awareness about the board post, post something to discord about it, if not in the regular old "tastyspleen" section/channel, then perhaps in one of the other lesser used sections to help it stand out more, like "suggestions" or "general" or "ffa". And it may be 2 or 3 days before anyone has a chance to get to it. Above all, just realize it's 2026 now, folks. King Quadz is gone and we all miss him. But this is how it is in 2026. The fact that we're still here at all is a gift.

There is also the other side where there has always been this attitude that quake 2 cant possibly have any cheaters. Head stuck in the sand syndrome and refusal to acknowledge it.  This is so dumb when you consider every single online game right now is plagued with cheaters even with anticheat systems in place. Cs go, cod, gta has a massive issue that's way out of control. The list goes on. You have to be an idiot to think there is no one cheating at this game. Its easier to ignore it than deal with it so it seems

People like Skyline were never the problem. There are tons of people who cheated back in the day that still play and don't cause any issues. His problem was that he would spend hours calling people the n word and accusing others of cheating with no evidence and that went away when he was muted.

The real problem is that nobody who is in charge actually plays the game so they're just banking on the idea that someone will just reach out if there's a problem, but since nobody plays and there's no clear rules, everyone just assumes it's a free-for-all. The only people who actually speak up are people who are pretty much at their limit. Everyone is basically free to throw around cheating allegations and spam "fag" or "bot" for hours with no consequence. I would say I'm too old for this crap but I've found most of the people who do this are in their 40s.

Since there's no one around to tell them they're being paranoid, other people pick up on that and start to believe that the only reason they're losing is because someone else must be cheating, so they pick up an aimbot or a wallhack to try and make things more even in their mind. Every single person here that actually does know how to play this game is severely underestimating how ignorant your average DM player is and how much of a problem that's become compared to 15 years ago.

Just throw it all away and start over, man. This is a GAME. We need more people like Elysium in the drivers seat who are actually passionate about preserving the authentic Quake 2 deathmatch experience and less people who treat this game as a substrate for releasing whatever political bile they have pent up in their psyche.

Can we ban these bots in DM and other servers that just spam bad jokes non-stop? I tried to join earlier and it took me 15 minutes to get in because there were about 10 of them connected

I've been sick with Q2 since 2007. It's incurable.
Dying and reviving is common. It's a shame the QT was good.
