By cwizardApril 12, 2017

As we teased in our first QuakeCon Update, we’re bringing a new focus to community competitions for our attendees this year with more than $50,000 in prizes!  Here’s a first-look at our competitions programming.
First, we have a strong line up from the id catalog:

    QUAKE II, 20th Anniversary Duel – $10,000
    QUAKE LIVE 4v4 CTF – $10,000
Battle of the BYOC: DOOM 2v2 Clan Arena – $7,000
The Elder Scrolls: Legends – $5,000
    QUAKE Duel – $5,000
RAGE Road Rage FFA – $5,000

We’ll also have fun competitions in the latest entry of the QUAKE franchise to liven up Friday and Saturday night, and an esports qualifier that we’ll have more details on soon.

Good news for the TDM community. Perhaps we have a reason to play some more again.

Quake / New interview with "Makaveli"

Just like the new Thresh interview, Thorin just did one with Makaveli. I figured also people would be interested to see this interview as well. Here's the original source: http://esreality.com/post/2770159/reflections-with-makaveli/

Thorin, esports writer and historian just did an interview with the legendary Quake and Q2 champion Thresh. I'm just linking the interview here in case anyone missed it:

Tech Junkie Lounge / iPhone 6 phones gripes
« on: September 24, 2014, 01:11:10 PM »
I thought it was just because of skinny jeans but apparently leaving the phone in front pocket is enough to bend the phone as well:

http://blog.chron.com/techblog/2014/09/bug-or-feature-iphone-6-plus-bends-easily/#26563101=0

Sounds like more Q&A fail from Apple. I also heard from local sources of a poor fellow who waited 6 hours in line to get his iPhone 6, only later that day to drop the phone and crack the screen, because the screen is made out of glass. Day 1 and he already has a broken iPhone.  :dohdohdoh:

I just watched this video and I agree with this guy's opinion in general about Apple products:

General Ownage / Q2 Invite Cup: Results
« on: October 28, 2013, 04:56:21 PM »
It's finally done.

Results:

1st) naymlis
2nd) adrenaline
3rd) Slugs
-full bracket here: http://challonge.com/q2invite_cup

Even though it took like 2-3 months to finish this tournament, I guess the tournament was a bit of a success since it actually got finished. Having drop outs suck but it seems to be the nature of the Q2 scene in general, I guess.

I'd say the main reason why I ran the tournament was to see people play and enjoy seeing how certain match ups I haven't seen often or before, would unfold. I think that ended up happening and here a few of the matches I enjoyed watching and recommend people to watch: kickr0 vs pyrex, adrenaline vs naymlis (loser finals), and slugs vs vae.

I think I learned quite a bit from trying to run this cup and the novice cup I ran during the summer, and I would have to give that thanks to haunted, naymlis, pyrex, and adrenaline. I had quite a lot of problems trying to find a good balance with my rule set for double elimination. They helped me a lot with creating a good rule set would that be balanced for double elim. The thing is that I am use to double elimination, but in fighting games like Street Fighter, where you usually don't have very specific rules for picking stages/maps based on how far you are in the bracket.

The final order of business though is probably to try to organize the demos more easily, for people's viewing pleasure. I'll post that here in this thread but it will probably be awhile until I can do this. Also, get the results for the finals. I don't even remember the scores and I forgot to take screenshots.  :dohdohdoh:

Q2 Invite Cup

Player list: adrenal1ne, Barton, f0cus, haunted, kickr0, naymlis, PyR3x, Slugskie
Brackets: http://challonge.com/q2invite_cup
Rounds: 2/3 maps for standard bracket play, 3/5 for loser/grand finals
Map pool: q2dm1, q2dm3, ztn2dm3, q2rdm2, ptrip, aerowalk, q2rdm7
Prizes: 1st: $40, 2nd: $25, 3rd: $15
IRC: #nadl and #tastyspleen on irc.enterthegame.net

Schedule: All games must be played within a week's time frame with a start date on Monday and end date of Sunday.
*First round of matches: Aug 5th -Aug 18th

Rules:

1. Standard match settings:
-15 minutes with 2 minute overtime
-no BFG -> vote weapons –bfg
-Powerups off -> vote powerups 0
-Spectator chat off during match -> vote chat 1
*note that running the EDL config will set this all for you -> vote webconfig EDL

2. Picking maps
Coin toss decides who drops the first map and chooses the first map. During map dropping,
each player will drop one map, alternating between each player until the appropiate amount of maps remain (3 for Bo3, 5 for Bo5). Maps chosen to be played will alternate between
players starting with the coin toss winner's first map pick.

3. Choosing servers
Players can choose to play on servers as home/away or on a neutral server. If a player refuses to play home/away, then a neutral server must be determined by both players. If such an agreement cannot between both players, an admin will choose a neutral server for both players to choose on.

4. Demos must be recorded in all games and sent later to the admin via email: @ bluenorthernlights [at] hotmail [dotcom]
Anticheat must be used in all games

5. Regarding Anticheat usage
-Anticheat is required with any of the various clients that are compatible with it (R1Q2, q2pro, aprq2).

6. Timers
Timers are banned from being used in this event. If you choose to play on a server that allows for timers to be used, an admin may request your demos from matches that have been played on such servers. If a player is found to be caught using timers, they will be kicked out of the event and/or have their prize withheld.

7. Server crashes or player disconnects
Going to use the same rule as in EDL. When disconnects are involuntarily, both players will restart the map while carrying over the same scores and playing with the time that was
remaining in the game before the disconnect occurred, plus three minutes.

8. Player behavior and conduct.
Players are expected to display a certain level of respect towards the admins and players. Trash talking is permitted to a certain degree but not to such level where it becomes disruptive and prevents matches to getting played. Such behaviors will not be tolerated and the admin may choose to kick such players out of the event.

9. Distribution of prizes
The admin will sometime after the event distribute prizes via paypal, so make sure that you have an account, however other methods of transfer maybe considered. Also, the admin may choose to withhold prizes if he/she sees fit (e.g. bad conduct by the player, cheating, etc.).

10. Admin has the final say.
The admin has the final decision on all matters, and also for rules that are not covered here.

I couldn't find a download for this online, but mrt hooked me up (thanks man). I just figure that people would be happy if there was a "fresh" download link to this available.

General Ownage / Invite Cup - Discussion
« on: July 01, 2013, 08:05:40 AM »
All that I have decided about it is that it will be double elimination. I need to iron out what the map pool will be like and when this event will take place because I don't know what people's schedules are like. If you are most likely to play in this, feel free to give me any feedback in order to improve this event. Here's the current player list:

adrenal1ne, Barton, Betty, haunted, naymlis, PyR3X, Slugs

It would be nice to see f0cus, kickr0, pboy, and/or $theking$ in this, so if you contact them please let them know about this cup. Also, I'm willing to add more players but I'm being selective about that.

Current player list: misery, ex, golgo, kyper, deadbeat, alpha

IRC info: #nadl on irc.enterthegame.net

Rules:
1. Standard match settings:
-10 minutes with 2 minute overtime
-no BFG -> vote weapons –bfg
-Powerups off -> vote powerups 0
-Spectator chat off during match -> vote chat 1

2. Map selection:
-Standard bracket play: The player with the higher seed picks first map, and then the second player chooses the second map. If a third map is necessary, the player with the highest frag count chooses who starts to kick the last remaining maps until there was one map left to choose from.
-Loser/Grand Finals:  The player with the higher seed picks first map, and then the second player chooses the second map. The third map, and if necessary, the fourth and fifth map will be determined by kicking maps. The player with the most wins or highest frag count after two maps will decide who kicks first. Both players will kick maps until there are two remaining maps left. The player who kicked last chooses which map gets played first.

3. Choosing servers
-Players can choose to play on servers as home/away or on a neutral server. If a player refuses to play home/away, then a neutral server must be determined by both players. If such an agreement cannot between both players, an admin will choose a neutral server for both players to choose on.

4. Regarding Anticheat usage
-Anticheat is required with any of the various clients that are compatible with it (R1Q2, q2pro, aprq2).

5. Cheating
-Cheats of any form (e.g. wallhacks, spiked models, aimbots, etc.) is prohibited from being used. If a player is caught using cheats, they will be kicked out of the event and/or have their prize forfeited.

6. Recording demos
-Recording demos is not required but it is highly recommended encouraged by admins, especially as it will aid a player when caught up in a dispute with another player. If you choose to play on a server that has timers enabled (e.g. TSLA, TSIL), admins may request for demos of matches played on such servers.

7. Timers
-Timers are banned from being used in this event. If you choose to play on a server that allows for timers to be used, an admin may request your demos from matches that have been played on such servers. If a player is found to be caught using timers, they will be kicked out of the event and/or have their prize withheld.

8. Playing matches on time.
-It is expected that players will play their matches. Refuse to do so by a player may result in a match forfeit.

9. Player behavior and conduct.
-Players are expected to display a certain level of respect towards the admins and players. Trash talking is permitted to a certain degree but not to such level where it becomes disruptive and prevents matches to getting played. Such behaviors will not be tolerated and the admin may choose to kick such players out of the event.

10. Distribution of prizes
-The admin will sometime after the event distribute prizes via paypal, so make sure that you have an account, however other methods of transfer maybe considered. Also, the admin may choose to withhold prizes if he/she sees fit (e.g. bad conduct by the player, cheating, etc.).

11. Admin has the final say.
-The admin has the final decision on all matters, and also for rules that are not covered here.

====================================================

Feedback is appreciated, especially when it comes to the tournament date. What I need to know the most is what people's schedules are like. I can push the tourney date to accommodate players as my schedule is quite open these days.

0x1337c0de / BBS documentary
« on: May 27, 2013, 09:17:19 PM »
I've been watching the past couple of days this documentary on the Bulletin Board System, which predated the internet. It is essential a compilation of interviews of former BBS innovators and users, which narrate the history and experience of the BBS. I'm only half way through the whole documentary, which is really long and divided up into sections.

Anyway, I thought I might want to share this with others here. Perhaps some people here even have found memories. Personally, I never knew about this back then and I rarely used a computer until the 2000s, but it's fascinating to know how the "internet" was back then.

General Ownage / Quick Cup - Any interest?
« on: May 17, 2013, 08:19:54 PM »
Anyone interested? I was thinking running a small and quick 8 man double bracket tourney. 2/3, loser and grand finals 3/5. Pick, pick, toss, toss. Small cash prize for first thru third place. The whole idea of this would be to run the tourney on one day on the weekend, lasting only 3-5 hours.

Depending who signs up, there could be another tourney for less seasoned players. Ideally that would be the best and if enough people are interested, I could picture a full bracket for both tournies. Anyway, I can post more details later, typing this all out on the phone is very trival. Please post if you are interested in playing or have feedback to give.

Quake / Anyone here tried this ladder yet?
« on: May 14, 2013, 08:13:29 AM »
http://esreality.com/post/2420284/quakeworld-ladder/

They made a ladder for Q2 and I see that Welkin tried it already. Seems like an interesting idea but the test servers are in Europe and I guess you have to sign up for that which is a minus for the NA scene.

Personally I'd rather see something like QLRanks added to this ladder and in general.

coop / How long does it take for the game to restart?

If someone progresses thru the maps before I hop on the server, how long do I have to wait until the game restarts to the beginning?
