Quake / Adding WallFly to a Q2 Server
« on: February 14, 2019, 02:44:49 PM »
WallFly is our Q2 server bot (somewhat similar to an IRC bot.) It allows players to hop between participating servers (via the GOTO command) as well as to broadcast invites requesting other players join the server where they are playing.

If you'd like to add WallFly, your server will need to run the q2admin mod. (In particular, the "say_person" command must be enabled. This is done within the q2admin.txt config file: say_person_enable "Yes")

The q2admin version we use on our own servers is here: http://tastyspleen.net/~quake2/q2admin/

WallFly will also need to know:
  • A short "GOTO" name for your server. (E.g. "RAD-RAILS")
  • A short description of your server. (E.g. "RAD Clan InstaGib - Canada")
  • Your server's IP address and port. (IP should be static.)
  • Your server's rcon password. (Kept strictly confidential, obviously.)

These details may be sent via private message to this forum Admin account.

tastyspleen.net / [2017] tastyspleen IP may be changing (new hosting)
« on: March 12, 2017, 02:10:31 PM »
Salutations!

We're evaluating moving tastyspleen to a different hosting company in Dallas. (The current company is overpriced. I could save approx $300/month at the new place.)

The new hardware will be better in every respect (faster CPU, more cores, more RAM, SSD instead of HDD, faster network port.)

The question is: How are pings?

This page will show pings from various locations around the world: https://asm.ca.com/en/ping.php

To see pings to our current host, just use "tastyspleen.net". To see pings to what the new datacenter would be, use "testing.tastyspleen.net".

Note, however, this site doesn't always tell the whole story. My own ping to the new datacenter is quite bad. :( This appears to be the fault of my local provider (Time Warner) peering with telia.net and taking a really inefficient route. By contrast, a friend who lives a few miles away from me (Cox Cable instead of Time Warner) has a great ping to the new datacenter. So it can all depend on your local ISP.

So, if anyone who is interested could ping both "tastyspleen.net" and "testing.tastyspleen.net" and paste your results in this thread, it would be helpful to see how the new location would perform for you. [To clarify, in this case I mean running pings on your local computer, e.g. from a cmd.exe window or shell, not using the website mentioned above.]

Thanks,

quadz

tastyspleen.net / Logged out from forum too quickly
« on: October 14, 2014, 09:21:52 AM »
Note that using the quick login fields at the top right of the forum seems to (sometimes?) default to settings where you become logged out very quickly.

An alternative is to use the [LOGIN] button in the forum nav bar:

http://forum.tastyspleen.net/quake/index.php?action=login

(If you're currently logged in, you'd need to logout before that button becomes visible.)

That should bring up a more detailed login screen where one can check the "Always stay logged in" box.

There's also a "Minutes to stay logged in" option. This is editable in Chrome and Firefox, but is disabled on IE (due to IE's interpretation of the disabled="" flag as true instead of false.)

But checking "Always stay logged in" should supersede that minute-based value anyway, in theory.

Hope this helps!
