Any and all fast heavy metal/hair metal frome the late 70s and 80's will get your adrenaline pumping nicely.

Hmm perhaps not - my best quake grooves happened with the 70's funk and surprisingly James Brown's :troll: "Git up off o' that thang" :troll: . . .

I actually like train. It's the map that most resembles a Duke3d map. Also it forces players to fight with weapons other than a RL or RG. I know that people like Zena will go into convulsions if they don't have a railgun for more than 10 seconds, but I personally enjoy the occasional Machinegun vs. Shotty match.

In the land of the shotguns, the man with two barrels is king.

You like train ! haha - next you will be admitting that you are Openly Episcopal . . .

Train is actually ok with me as long it's not etarnal.  It has its fun side.

Two barrels ! hahah

Two Sheds? Anyone . . . wink wink nudge nudge

See the problem with all the posts are....

That I don't understand what the hell you guys are talking about.  I need one of you chumps to come over my house and do all this for me.  But I have been known to drug people and remove kidneys, so I wouldn't advise it.

 :D

:) Lidz - so one question - if you are in q2dm8 "warehouse", can you jump from the ground in front of the grenade launcher UP to the launcher?  If not, you might enjoy looking into changing your settings.

Or you could just use gl_swapinterval 0 instead of forcing driver settings.

Oh cool too - I just want to let people know about this.  It took me 6 years before I even tried it and it's a capability nobody should be without.

Too important to "keep to yourself"

Quake / Box Jumping - You might be capable - Video Card
« on: November 18, 2008, 06:56:46 PM »
Folks,

I just got a new video card and I was all happy to put it in and get cranking.

My old one was pretty fast, nothing blazing but a decent card.

My old one could get over 90 fps which made me "eligible" for the "box jump".

The box jump is when you can jump high up on a box, like in q2dm8.

The old card could render (?) 50,000 triangles a second while the new one could do like 54 billion (I made the numbers up).

When I put the new card in, I could not get the frame-rate to go past 60 - man I felt stupid about getting this new card that could not run fast.

To get the box jump you need to set a few settings, which I checked:

1 - set your cl_maxfps to 120

2 - Make sure you run a time demo to see if your card goes over 90 fps

2A) Start Quake in the console type:
          timedemo 1 [Enter]
          demomap demo1.dm2 [Enter]

You should see a demo play and it will tell you how fast your frame-rate is.  Your current computer may just need to have the cl_maxfps set to 120.  I tried my new card out and was bummed - only 60 frames.  I tried all types of things, feeling that I had bought a lemon of a video card.

Then, I tried one more thing - I set my adapter card (using the program in windows that the video card folks made) not to sync-every-frame.  This was the key.  I tried the demo again and got an amazing 580 frames per second.

So the short answer is that many of you might have a good video card that you just need to tune a little to be able to get some better performance.   This little enhancement will give you some neat jumping abilities that you did not have and they new "skill" comes just by setting the card up right.

In any case folks, if you cannot do "box jumps" you might be really close to able and just not set to do it.

First move:

Try setting your frame-rate, nothing special:

cl_maxfps 120

Second Move:

Check your vertical sync-every-frame setting - if it is set to on, that will keep you from jumping well.

Third Move:

Try the time demo above and see if you get over 90 fps

Fourth Move:

Play with resolutions

Finally:

Buy another video card.

Ok - I hope you look into these settings - it may make your gaming a little more fun.

Regards,

Habib

If the server is currently playing koth6, and you mymap campcity, then there will be a two map gap:

nextmap => jail3 jail4 campcity jail5 ...

You know, I just realized for me, I often use the mymap for map _avoidance_, so a mapstack like that  just begs for adjustment (devilsih giggle).   With this new method, one just needs to be strategic about the sequence and call up the rotation maps between the non-rotation - today's method is more sequence dependent, like if you need a 4 map set, bracket two stock maps with the customs - generates interesting "math". The obvious gap is when multiple people really want to play customs.  I guess your motive is to keep the vanilla server weighted towards SP maps - it makes sense, kind of like getting enough sleep, stepping out of the shower to pee or thanking a robber for a very courteous robbery.

(or just gay -> Train!)

Don't worry man, that one is always able to get to the top of the mymap stack, being one of those bestest maps n' all . . .

The fact that Train can supercede Koth6 (not my fav, but big popular with the ladies) is just criminal (grin grin).

I now consider Train "Fixed" now that fraglimit is 15, 20 is tolerable too.   Just perfectly right set at ~15/20.

I think mutant is the other extreme....If you dont know which map you want to pick and type mymap(holy moly,,,)you get a felt half of an hour *beep* spam (thats the sound quake2 makes if a textmessage shows up)and like 300 pages of alphabetic sorted map proposals....you still dont have a clue which one to take. And "mymap random +pu"is  kind of :LAME:

Yeah...  Way back when, when hardly anyone used to play on mutant, I thought it would be fun to have a place where pretty much every map in the archive was available.

But the more mutant gained a regular clientele, the less reasonable it seemed to have some truly awful maps available in the mymap list. :dohdohdoh:

So I would definitely support trimming the mymap list on mutant down to just maps that at least don't suck.

Regards,

The more I ponder this, the more I recall that my personal liking is for fast maps with lots of players (nostalgia for the oldskool DM with 16+players = best).  I used to play mutant almost exclusively when it was busy with lots of hardcore a-holes, of course a-holes being metaphor for "good players hard to kill" (I recall the "Chacal"/"Punk" era rocked on Muto), but somehow it turned into a ghost town (almost seemed to die for a while) and I took vanilla as "Home" because it had the most players, or at the time, many more.  I liked it a lot when the customs came to Vanilla because it became (for me) what I liked on Mutant - lots of action/high playercount with really great map variety.    The recent shift is what it is is less enjoyable for habib (no perfection this side of heaven) - It just means that it's time to find a new "homespot" - it looks like the other servers are rocking hard now (DM almost always full and mutant often has many players).   Vanilla was fun with the customs so readily available, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that the SP maps are a snoozy set for me and not what I personally get turned on by.   The recent tuning makes this more apparent - I grabbed a tissue and am drying things off right now . . .

Thanks . . .

:)

Habib

enqueued at the 6th place.

Yeah - I had one that went to slot 9 and just decided to bail in frustration.

It's probably selfish, but I too didn't want to sit through 8 maps until "the cool one" (or whatever I was thinking) came up.  This was a situation where 2 others has queued up custom maps and they went to slot 3 & 6 (cool - that's what _other_ people wanted and I'm ok with that).  Unfortunately, this command was designed to give the users some control over the rotation, but the timing buffers appear to be nullifying its purpose a bit.  Yea, one could assume the other folks who did not vote were really dead set on and excited about playing the normal rotation (who knows?), or maybe just asleep at the wheel (my guess).  The sad part here is that the maps that everyone really really wants to play, as evidenced by the votes, are now on the "dis-approved" list, and much less available.   It is just a bummer.  A sort of "let's just go play q-bert instead" styled bummer. It's lost its luster a bit.

In this case (yes, just my have-never-paid-a-TS-bill-Opinion so don't really count anyways), this all falls under the "harmful improvement" category.  I realize that the motives are good and intended to give a very fine balance between liberty and anarchy.

Habib

NOTE: "sequential IA" was never supposed to be possible, actually.  I had looked into fixing it several times, but some code needed to be restructured so I kept putting it off.

Never has such a bug been so enjoyed . . .

I'm curious if y'all percieve this as a good or bad change to mymap.

Time to lighten the mood...

I have been preaching for years to invest in alternative energy, most notably my prototype "Afro Fuel" engine, which is powered by the person's natural swagger. Since I personify swagger, this energy would be nearly infinite, and power anything that it needs to power. :afro:

Yes - your Fro is supple and so smooth - I can feel the glow of sta-sof-fro from here - no napps - just pure sheen

hahaha

I like the idea - running on pure swagger

Quake / Re: Cheating issue: A Solution?
« on: October 21, 2008, 06:01:50 PM »
I think that this is all needless talk.  If we level the playing field by FORCING ALL people to cheat, then things are fair again.

My suggestion is that we all install ProCheat 2.31 (or Higher) and force others to do so as well.   Procheat has proven that when all players cheat EQUALLY, then the game is re-equalized.
