Discussion / Re: Future tourney ideas...

Competitive team RA2 (in Europe at least) was very very campy. I'm struggling to find some demos to show it though :( I still think the 1v1 variant is totally superb though ...

The thing is, despite all the "weapstay is easier" opinions I actually think it's the other way round. Statistically speaking, the more chance your opponents have of possessing a gun the less chance you have of killing them :)

If you're going down the "team weapstay" road you might as well do RA2 pickups. Which, when played seriously, is the campiest experience known to man ;)

Great!

I suppose the only problem is that if something unpopular is queued up then people might leave. But still, cool :)

Quake / Re: The Art Of Aiming - Help Needed
« on: June 13, 2005, 02:12:52 PM »
With the rail there are three ways to aim (that I know of):

1) Tripwire - just position the crosshair where you know (or hope) someone will appear and wait without moving the mouse.
2) Flick rail - a reactive shot where you flick the wrist to shoot someone not in front of you.
3) Strafe rail - a bit like tripwire but where the aim is slightly off and you strafe rather than move the mouse to adjust it.

You can to some extent combine all three.

The only way to get better with this gun is to practise with it, a lot. Get to the point where you don't have to think about aiming. To do this I wouldn't recommend Instagib but rather FFA. Force yourself to always use the gun when you have it, even if the situation would warrant other weapons. Go for everything, however unrealistic the shot may seem. Some of them will come off, which increases confidence no end ...

Now, IMHO the RL is a much harder weapon to use properly because it is not instant hit i.e. the projectiles take time to get to their destination. In particular, if you are an HPB the blessed LPBs will find it very easy to dodge your rockets.

In general, the rocket launcher is all about leading the target, i.e. shooting where the other player is going not where they are now. If you're lucky you may actually be able to direct the other player where you want them to go by "bracketing" them i.e. firing to both sides of them quickly.

If practicable, the best way to learn to use the RL is by playing a lot of RA2.

When it comes to the chaingun and other "hosepipes" the main thing is to have a steady mouse hand - don't jerk. This is probably my weakest area, especially going to the right.

That brings up another thing. Most players have a natural "mouse direction" which they find easier with particular weapons. For me, it is rightwards with the rail and leftwards with the other weapons. This means that if I have the rail I will tend to always try to get the other player on my right. If you can work out which side your opponent favors it can give you an advantage in a "duke out".

Quake / Thank you TastySpleen!
« on: June 13, 2005, 09:08:34 AM »
I played a couple of 1v1 matches last night, and also late last week. On the whole my butt has been kicked badly but last night I managed to have a couple of reasonable games on dm3 (the only map I have a clue about).

Anyway, I would just like to say thank you TastySpleen!

Reasons:

1) Not just running dm1 on the 1v1 servers - yeehaa!
2) Providing a superb ping and connection (considering I am on modem in the UK).
3) Most of all, being a great community with very little bad behaviour :)

BTW having never played 1v1 before the one thing I have found a total surprise is how effective the hyperblaster is (for suppresive fire). I do believe I might even have got a frag with it ... Even more amazing is that I don't get lagged out when it's used!

I would go for RA2 1v1 myself. Loads of great maps. It is also simpler for those who haven't really played 1v1 before since there is no item control issue.

Of course you'd have to ban those danged LPBs from using the chain gun ... ;)

The BFG is a lot less of a problem when it only appears every 30 secs.

Ditto the pill spammer ...

I thought I'd be in a minority here  :)

It doesn't really matter, it's only actually dm1-8 where weapstay really annoys me. dm2 in particular.

But ... I still maintain it is a much more skillful and enjoyable game. It can give the HPBs a better chance too, not there are many of us about these days.

Also, I actually find ammo to be far more of a problem with weapstay on some maps. You are almost penalised for staying alive, lol.

About Element's comment - the main reason you could rack up frags so quick is because in weapstay people automatically run for the nearest power weapon after spawning. Whereas, with weap respawn the tendency is to hide for a bit, grab some armor and try to scrounge up a useful secondary weapon (grenades being the favorite) before heading for the hot spots. The effect of this is that a) one shot rail kills are slightly reduced, b) the secondary weapons actually come into play and c) the whole map gets used.

As far as lots of people being stuck with blaster, yes this can be true. It's not necessarily a bad thing though. Some of the most fun games I've had were on dm7 with weapstay off. The sheer ridiculousness of blasting away for hours to kill someone just makes you laugh after a while.

Anyway, thanks for listening. I know I'm not going to win the argument but had to try ... :)

Quake / Weapstay
« on: June 06, 2005, 12:16:13 PM »
Hi.

I've recently discovered these servers after a 2 year break from Q2 and they're great  ;D Especially Mutant, I've always lurved custom maps.

Just a small suggestion though, which is sure to be rebuffed I'm sure ...  ::)

How about turning weapstay off on Mutant? I can see why it has to be on for the Vanilla server to keep it newbie friendly but since Mutant is publicised as being "experimental" peeps will perhaps expect things to be different.

IMHO weap respawn is a much more skillful game and I personally enjoy it a LOT more.  Benefits are a) it cuts out the vast majority of the camping and spamming and b) a lot more of the map gets to see action rather than just the familiar weapstay hotspots. If there is a downside it is that games become slower and take longer to hit fraglimit. Personally I wouldn't call that a downside at all though ...

P.S. I am in the UK hence my silly ping ...
