The only REAL q2 player there was David, the rest were a bunch of casual q3 players, not even Rix is a real q2 player despite his great experience in quakecons. If I lived close by, I would have made an effort to go there, it would be something unforgettable for me, even if I were destroyed by David. Indeed, it would have been an honor to play against him.

Mrt confirmed correctly that the Rix in this past tournament was some guy from Sweden, not the American player who competed on Q2 LANs two decades ago: https://www.esportsearnings.com/players/1741-rix-dan-hammans

The ruleset wasn't up to the competitive scene's standards and the event was BYOC-only, making the tournament not worth competing in unless you wanted an ez payday.

I'm glad David went though. He got that kick ass trophy which has invulnerability and quad damage on the same stand.

DOWNLOAD MAPS HERE !! / Re: New Q2SP: Citadel v3.0 released

This didn't work for me with Q2Pro (version r1504~924ff39). When I boot up any map in Citadel, my game crashes.

On a side note, I don't think you can change the video reference for Q2Pro, if that could also help in my situation.

For us to have a chance to bring out the real vets, we would need a true esports event with a ruleset that is tailored to the vets' needs. I can't picture Scooby or DaHanG wasting their time with this event, even though they could easily win the 10k prize if they wanted to show up.

I am glad though that tournament organizers have at least found some sort of way to allow non-BYOC registrants to enter this Q2 duel tournament.

On a side note, however, another issue that a non-BYOC player will deal with is that he will have almost no reason to bring his own PC to the event, since he would have no safe place to store it at the event. The BYOC room is safer than any room in the hotel. Thus he would be screwed over for any side events that would occur, such as random FFA in the BYOC or the side event that Jehar mentioned.

Anyway, I hope people who go have fun!

Q2 Training Camp / Re: cvars for online multiplayer, oh and clients
« on: May 03, 2017, 06:42:04 PM »
If you have played quake 3 you would know they have cvars or command variables to use with the game, anything from snaps and rate, to mouse sensitivity and rail color, and a cvar that makes your rail graphic instantly dissapear making it mentaly easier to land a rail wtihout the lingering trail for seconds on end.

Sounds like then you want to use Q2Pro. You can easily change the rail trail settings with that client.

cl_railtrail_type "1"
cl_railtrail_time "0.2"
cl_railcore_width "3" // Default setting
cl_railcore_color "green"

Choosing Q2PRO or R1Q2 just comes down to preference. Both clients are excellent but some people prefer Q2pro since it has more console commands. I personally use R1Q2 since my settings work best in that client.

Here's a quick reference to some console commands:

Q2: https://www.eecis.udel.edu/~portnoi/quake/quakeiicom.html
Q2Pro: http://skuller.net/q2pro/nightly/client.html
R1Q2: Can't find them since r1ch's forums are down.

Here are commands you probably want to utilize:

cl_async "0" // At zero, it makes your rendering and physics run by your cl_maxfps value. I recommend this setting for better movement and trick jumping. With the setting on at 1, it feels like there is a bit of a delay when moving and jumping around. That's just my opinion tho.
cl_maxfps "90" // 90 or 120 are good values. 120 probably will probably give smoother frames on a modern LCD monitor
r_maxfps "" // You don't need this really with cl_async at "0".

g_select_empty "0" // Allows for you to switch to weapons which have no ammo available.

gl_dynamic "0" // Turns off dynamic lighting
gl_clear "1" and gl_polyblend "0" // Together get rid of that annoying flash you get when you pick up items and get hit by another player's weapon
gl_modulate "" // Turns up brightness on textures without using gamma. Right now, I'm using 20. I use this to turn off the shadows mainly.
vid_gamma "" // Adjusts screen brightness.

//Lets you set your screen resolution manually.
vid_ref "r1gl" // You need the video renderer r1gl if you are using R1Q2 in order to use these commands.
set vid_forcewidth ""
set vid_forceheight ""

//Turn all of these to "0" so you don't download a million useless files.
allow_download_maps
allow_download_models
allow_download_players
allow_download_sounds

netgraph "1" //Displays a graph which shows your packetloss and latency.

That's all I can think of at the moment. I'll add some stuff if I forgot something important.

Good point Barton I used my twitter account (https://twitter.com/dondeq2) to reach out to @QuakeCon and @Jehar about your idea. Taking it a step farther, if they made a couple computers available for competitors outside the BYOC pool, I think the Q2 community could even organize a prelim tourney to earn those spots. That tourney could be broadcast on tastytv and other twitch channels and would be nothing but good buzz for Quake Champions.  :bravo:

Once I got a reply back, I got the impression the tournament structure is inflexible. Thanks though for the outreach.

Don't even worry about it. My q2 days are over anyway

I hear you. I have to agree that it feels like it's time to move on. Fuck though, this event resembles getting blue balls.  :nana:

Will be donating my time to help in anyway for Jehar and Deadbeat.  I agree with what you said

That's a great idea! I hope they benefit from your help.

Haha really? Sounds about right. I was legitimately considering going. There's a handful of others as well that would place but I guess they wanted jehar vs dahang winners quarters finals.

I got a response back. Apparently why the tournaments are BYOC is because there are going to be 8 tournaments ran in total, which is too many to be ran on sanctioned tournament computers. I understand this point however I don't see how some events like the duel tournaments couldn't be more accommodating so that more players could enter, such as having a few designated computers for players who couldn't bring their own PC, or have those same players play on another player's machine who's in their pool.

While I do appreciate IDsoftware showing us Q2 players some love, this tournament's structure is still disappointing. Even though it's a BYOC tournament and thus not true eSports, this tournament is still important to the Q2 community since we haven't had another Q2 LAN tournament since 11 years ago. Also with $10,000 on the line, I find it a bit ridiculous that the most competitive veteran players don't have a chance to compete for that prize, especially since we are the only players who have spent years and even decades playing duel while others only played it casually or moved onto Q3 and other games. That's why us vets really deserve spots to enter this tournament.

Anyway, I just hope a Q2 player wins it. I know that Jehar has a BYOC seat and others in clan BTF, so I hope those guys gatekeep for us.

Jehar told me that if you didn't buy a BYOC pass you can't enter the tournament. Those passes sold out on the same night purchases were available to make. The dream is dead for us, I think.

Good news for the TDM community. Perhaps we have a reason to play some more again.
