Pepp was a really nice guy and great to chat with. He was passionate about Quake2 and the community. He will certainly be missed.

He has changed the bfg hum and renamed it to the railgun hum which IS failing the file check.

What proof do you have that he is using the bfg hum file as his railgun hum? Only server admins would have been able to check something like this, which I'm sure they have.

The server would have logged something like "ANTICHEAT FILE VIOLATION: .... has a modified sound/weapons/rg_hum.wav [<file hash>]" whenever the railgun hum sound was played on M's end,
where <file hash> is the SHA-1 hash of the file that got played. Admins would have cross checked this file hash against the hash of the same file in the pak. It must have been the same, meaning he was using the rg_hum.wav that came in the pak (which was fine) and not something else. Hence he was cleared of any wrong doing.

You can check this yourself via Windows command:

...he is using that BFG beep for the rail gun hum. Along with loud clanking grenade sounds as footsteps.  seeing it isnt cheating everyone can go download it

I downloaded it and checked...
- Railgun hum (rg_hum.wav) seems fine. It's just slightly louder and with a different pitch to the standard railgun hum. It is NOT the BFG beep/hum (bfg_hum.wav) as you claim.
- Footsteps (step1.wav, step2.wav, step3.wav, step4.wav) seems fine. They are slightly louder than the standard footsteps. They are NOT 'loud clanking grenade sounds' as you claim.

Admins would have cross-checked the file hashes against what was in the server logs, to confirm what files M was actually using. They have now cleared him and his files of any wrong doing ...and exposed your lies in the process


If anything, this thread should be renamed to 'Alpha/Orbisson the big liar'. You should be apologising to both M and Mon for falsely accusing them of cheating.

Quake / OzQuake2 Australian Quake 2 servers

For any Aussie players out there, I'm running a couple of new Sydney-based Australian Quake 2 servers if you are interested:

FFA deathmatch	3.25.221.137:27910	(goto OZFFA)
Team deathmatch	3.25.221.137:27950	(goto OZTDM)

Both have Wallfly, map voting, player mute voting, various spectator/chasecam options, etc, with the latest OpenFFA and OpenTDM server mods.

The FFA server runs DM1-8 map rotation, with voteable+custom maps. Mymap isn't currently available, but I could look into it if there's enough interest.

Would be nice to see the Aussie community play together like old times. If you have any questions/requests, please pm me here and I'll try to help.

Recently heard this really sad news. A huge loss to the Quake 2 community world-wide. Quadz helped a bunch of us with configuring and tweaking Australian Quake 2 servers (OGN and later OzQuake) many years ago. He would always respond quickly to our queries and always had the right solution for everything. His unwavering dedication to the TS Quake 2 community and keeping it thriving for so long, is a monumental feat! Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

UPDATE re: dark scenes in the video...
If the video appears too dark for you, it may be related to a codec/colorspace issue which I'm still investigating. The original video does not look as dark. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Media Player Classic users: using Video Mixing Renderer 9 instead of Enhanced Video Renderer should fix the problem. Ensure you aren't running any custom video filters/shaders. Alternatively use VLC player.

Youtube stream: temporary workaround for Nvidia users: right-click desktop, click 'Nvidia Control Panel', on the left setion click to expand 'Video', click 'Adjust video color settings', select 'With the NVIDIA settings', click 'Advanced' tab, select 'Limited (16-235)' for Dynamic range, click 'Apply', close the window, restart your browser and try watching the video. Hopefully it won't be as dark now.

AC is not worthless, but based on its current state and general consensus on this thread, players should not be judged/penalised for not using it.

The current problems with AC:
- won't work with latest versions of newer clients like Q2PRO
- only works on Windows (though rumoured to not work on Windows 8?)
- potential lack of updates to ensure new bots/hacks are catered for
- concerns about AC server being able to gain unauthorized access to files/directories on a client's machine
- paranoia/mistrust/false accusations between players who use AC and players who don't (*cough* Alpha )

Personally, I'm OK with all of the above limitations, and since R1Q2 does everything I need, I've stuck with the R1Q2+AC combination. As a bonus, AC gives me some level of credibility if I am suspected of cheating and also lets me join AC forced servers, but I personally don't see the benefit in forcing AC in its current state on all players. Except maybe forcing it on a suspicious player/troublemaker with specific/known IP (and subnet ranges to a lesser extent, but unfortunately some legitimate players may be caught out by this).

That said, Q2PRO is a great client and I do use it for viewing demos as it is far superior to R1Q2 in that regard. I'll happily switch completely over to Q2PRO (and sacrifice AC) if the need ever arises to run Quake 2 on Linux/Mac, or if I find an essential Q2PRO feature that is not in R1Q2.

This shows 0 lost packets to the server. So no packet loss on your route there.
Maybe its on the route back. Check what times of the day its occurring so TS admins can check the reverse route at those times.
