Quake / Re: Updated AprQ2 for Mac and Linux users
« on: March 04, 2011, 06:14:08 AM »
- Added cl_draw_playername, cl_draw_playername_x, cl_draw_playername_y from Q2PRO (view player names by pointing at them in game)

Personally, I have had cl_draw_playernames for years now in my modifications to the AprQ2 sources. :-)
Very nice feature indeed and works flawlessly (in Linux and Windows).

Happy New Year to everybody!

A bit late for this thread, but anyway, I would like to report a ping worsening :-(

With direct input windows mouse acceleration should be irrelevant. And direct input is what gives most people a smooth and enjoyable gaming experience. So I do not see the problem.

Quake / Re: q2 Evolution
« on: December 16, 2008, 11:49:12 AM »
I used APR in a different mod, i loved it. I use r1q2 in tdm and i dont find anything wrong with it...APR had some cooler features(i liked the cartoon skins, the lagometer was useful, and of course the winamp system) but i could careless.

Sure, having the choice between several options is nice. And whoever likes some client best or some other,  I couldn't care less.

But I always find it sad when good products/ideas just don't get the attention that they deserve, while other products/ideas are used everywhere - only because of better marketing, hype or simple lack of knowledge.

For me, a product that has matured well enough, is timeless - far from being "dated" or something, especially when it even DOES have all the cool features (independent physics etc.).

On the other hand, for me R1Q2 is inferor to AprQ2 because (among other aspects I mentioned) it doesn't have line wrap in chat texts:
Already this single flaw disqualifies the product to me and makes it (basically) useless, unusable:
I do not just play, I often have some nice little conversation with some of you folks, and when I can't read the end of a line of text, the whole program is worthless to me.

This doesn't mean, I do not use R1Q2 sometimes - I do, just for some moody change from time to time and especially when I am only playing and not chatting. I also use q2pro occasionally. It is all about variation and a good selection of clients. But so far nothing compares to my favourite: AprQ2. ;-)

@Realistic

While I am convinced that way too much cheating goes on on the servers (not everything gets detected, I am sure) and while I appreciate measures to prevent some of the cheating, I am not in favour of relentless enforcement of anticheat. Linux users, for one, cannot use anticheat, it is simply not possible.

Starting as a newbie years ago, I suspected many if not all were cheating (therefore my nick name, hehe) - later, I considered it as a rather rare scenario - in the meantime, I am convinced again (to some degree) that way more cheating is going on than most would believe. But okay, this is hard to prove. But a global and general enforcement of anticheat doesn't take care of those who use Linux, FreeBSD etc.

Trouble Shooting / Re: Grenade pickup oddity
« on: December 16, 2008, 07:11:20 AM »
Great!

I already wondered if it was all in my head....
Some people must have seen when two days ago I repeatedly asked other players if they noticed a change in auto weapon switch behaviour or whether they were aware that they respawned not just with a blaster, but that whenever one respawned one already had some grenades!

I disliked this very much:
a) the fact that auto-switching to grenades no longer worked
b) the fact that you do not start with a mere blaster but already had some powerful grenades

Already having grenades from the start made it less interesting to walk around and look for grenades, so it took the fun away. I really hated that.

I am glad this is all sorted out again.

EDIT:
What I, however, still would welcome very much and sometimes complained about:
Having picked up a grenade and then getting a grenade launcher, I would like to auto-switch to having the grenade launcher activated because, for sure, I prefer the GL to the mere grenades.
But anyway, glad to have the old behaviour back!

Quake / Re: q2 Evolution
« on: December 15, 2008, 05:58:55 AM »
Not the best one, in my opinion. AprQ2 is way better. :-)
What makes you think that R1Q2 is the best client? Because most players use it?

The reason AprQ2 sucked for me was because it erased my single player files when I tried to use it. Also, who needs some little clock in the corner of the screen? That's not a good reason to get it (get a watch)! Plus, it's a dated client. I haven't seen an update for it since like 2007. R1Q2 has more recent updates. Now I don't know about Linux much since I'm a windows user, but I still like R1Q2 better.

Perhaps it was what could be called "user error"?
I never had any problems with erased files when using AprQ2.

And who needs some little clock?
I do. It is just comfortable and nice not to lose touch with the time it is while playing a while.
By the way, the clock is just an example of many more nice little features that sum up to something R1Q2 cannot offer to me.

Do you also ask me "who needs intact long lines?" Take the broken ones. Hahahha.

And how is it dated? And who needs constant updates? (yes, I know, some kids always need the most up-to-date OS, the most up-to-date software version, the most up-to-date anything) ;-)

First of all, quake2 has evolved during such a long time, there is not much left that needs to evolve.

But anyway, Maniac is quiet for extended periods of time, but then, suddenly, there is a new version. Happened with earlier versions, too.
And none of the features of AprQ2 can be called dated. It has independent physics and everything you could dream of. Name me one R1Q2 feature that you don't find in AprQ2.

It is your choice, and nobody (not me, at least) has any objections.

But you motivated me to reply to your "it is the best client out there right now". Which it is not! (Some things just like everywhere in life just experience more hype and marketing, that's all.)

EDIT:
And yes, of course, the compilability of the source code and the sound support, DO matter to me, especially (but not only) as a Linux user.

Quake / Re: q2 Evolution

R1Q2 is the best client out there right now, it might not have bump mapping and
other gimmick features, but it sure has excellent multiplayer performance.

Not the best one, in my opinion. AprQ2 is way better. :-)
What makes you think that R1Q2 is the best client? Because most players use it?

This is not to offend the author of R1Q2, but everybody has different preferences, and sometimes people simply do not know anything but what they are used to...

For me, there are many reasons why I prefer AprQ2:

1) AprQ2 has always compiled easily, both for Windows and for Linux; by contrast, R1Q2 was hard to compile for Linux some time ago and now still is for Windows because the source code does not come with some essential things like zlib etc.

2) AprQ2 has more nice little features that I would not like to miss:
- on-screen clock (not the console clock, but a small on-screen clock), colour can be changed: I like such a clock because I sometimes play in the dark and want to see what time it is
- coloured console text and nick name highlighting etc.

3) AprQ2 has a really, really good ignore command (ignorenick) which easily and efficiently filters out an annoying player

4) AprQ2 has (just like most other q2 clients except R1Q2) a working line wrap in chat texts or notify text lines; but R1Q2 cuts long lines and you cannot read all the text! Very very annoying! This is relevant if you use something like gl_scale 2 in order to get better readable/bigger text. - I wonder why this feature still didn't make it into R1Q2...

5) AprQ2 for Linux has full sound support while R1Q2 basically just offers OSS sound which prevents ALSA users from having sound mixing: A Linux R1Q2 user can only hear the game sounds OR listen to music OR hear instant messenger sounds etc. because R1Q2 doesn't offer sound support for ALSA or sdl (well, in my case, this is not really important because I managed to compile my own R1Q2 with built-in sdl sound, but anyway).

6) AprQ2 has excellent widescreen support with automatical fov correction.

.... more features I am too lazy to name now or that I don't remember right now

And even if some of the above points are not relevant to most users, there is still nothing I could see in R1Q2 that wouldn't be in AprQ2 too.

There is just one thing left where R1Q2 looks better:
active forum and active participation of the R1Q2 author

my 2 cents,

Since today (january 31) my ping is perfect (taking into consideration my European location...).

So something must have changed this very day! Would be interesting to hear if tastyspleen knows about some specific changes today... Or perhaps, it is just my default ISP.

Nevertheless, interesting to see that the route still goes through level3.net, and in spite of this fact my ping is very low now.

Here is a traceroute from today:

Hmm, yeah... :(  That's a pretty lousy route.

I'm sorry it worked out that way.  Frankly I would have loved to keep the Houston server, if only the pings hadn't been worse for so many players... quadcore for only $50/mo more than the new dualcore.  :frustration:

Regards,

quadz

Hi, quadz :-)

I have to live with that, but hey, I am grateful for all your work and one can't find a better q2 server than tastyspleen, that much is clear.

Using some call by call DSL providers is still an option, so the situation is not hopeless. ;-)

you cant expect to have a good ping from Europe :)
i have not played in a few days, though im pretty sure m ping is the same as it was

Not that I expect a good ping, but there is an obvious difference between a ping of around 180 and one of around 130, and with the previous IP I often had a ping around 130 or 135, while the current (and the old IP) mean a bad ping to me, which during the "rush hour" is even worse, even around 200 or more sometimes.

The routing to the temporary tastyspleen IP was clearly better for me.

traceroute shows (for me) that whenever level3.net is involved, my ping is bad.
And traceroute to the previous IP took a different route:

Guess, I will have to live with it or (as I often do) use an alternative provider just for playing quake2 (which costs extra money, of course.)....

thanks anyway for tastyspleen and its sponsors/supporters

So clearly, it is not theplanet.com per se which gives me a bad ping, but the routing used by my default provider. Too bad...

Sad to hear the routing will change again...

Because my ping is now better than before  - using my default ISP and even better when I use an alternative call by call DSL provider.

So personally, I welcome the new IP and routing.

I'm sorry, that was just random thoughts about it that I really shouldn't have posted, I didn't really intend to direct it at you.

Hmm, well I really have no interest in playing single player maps or anything, I was only trying to load one to see how the client worked.

Code: [Select]
====== AprQ2 Initialized ======

]map q2dm1
------- Loading gamei386.so -------
LoadLibrary (./baseq2/gamei386.so): undefined symbol: Com_Error
********************
ERROR: failed to load game DLL
********************

And yes, I did put "gamei386.so" in the baseq2 folder.

This should really come with better documentation, Quetoo was so much easier to set up :-\

Complaining and using disgruntled smileys is pointless! I am not the author of AprQ2, and after all it is free software. You could, however, contact Maniac...
And you should try to read and learn more about how Linux works, I would say.

Quetoo may be easier to set up, but it is also a much simpler client, and it doesn't even come with a menu system (though on purpose). And what I dislike most is the missing text rescaling feature.

As to the above error:
It is well known to me, and it appears to be a new bug introduced since version 1.21 of AprQ2. I already wrote about it in Maniac's forum.

So basically you have two options:

1) Use an older gamei386.so, and you should not get this error when doing a "map ..." OR "gamemap ..." command.

2) Compile version 1.20 of AprQ2 and use it for single player maps, while you use version 1.211 of AprQ2 when playing online games.

Hope, this helps.
